A Massachusetts man faces felony assault charges after a brutal assault that occured after the man was pulled over on what started as a routine traffic stop.
He was pulled over for driving erratically, but a dangerous attack that included assaults on two police officers, including biting of a finger. Under Massachusetts assault laws, the defendant faces penalties of up to 10 years in prison. In addition to being accused of multiple felony assault offenses, he also faces charges of driving to endanger and OUI – Drugs.
Very few cases of assault and battery on a police officer are this serious. Charges like can sometimes be made for a minor scuffle. But in this case, a dangerous person apparently went completely out of control, possibly under the influence of drugs. Attempts to subdue him with pepper spray appeared to have little effect.
News reports also suggested he has a history of mental illness.
